Beginner Cold Process Soap Making Guide
Welcome back to the Deez L'town Beez Student Resource Center! Congratulations on completing your Beginner Soap Making Class. This guide is designed to walk you through the soap-making process step by step as you create your own batches at home.
Remember: Soap making is both a science and an art. Creativity comes later — the science must come first. Always prioritize safety and accurate measurements.
Before You Begin
1. Gather Your Safety Equipment
2. Before opening your lye, make sure you're wearing

3. Work in a well-ventilated area, away from children and pets.
Equipment Checklist
1. You'll need:

Digital scale (grams preferred)

Stainless steel or heavy-duty plastic mixing bowls

Silicone spatulas

Stick (immersion) blender

Heat-safe containers for lye solution

Thermometer (optional but helpful)

Soap mold

Measuring spoons (for additives only)

Paper towels and white vinegar for cleaning surfaces
(Vinegar is for surfaces only—not for skin.)

These metals react with lye and can create dangerous situations.



Step 1
Choose Recipe
Always formulate or verify your recipe using The Beekeeper's Wife Soap Calculator before you begin. For beginner recipes, use: •5% Superfat •Recommended water/lye concentration provided by the calculator Double-check every measurement before mixing.
Step 5
Combine Oils & Lye
When both mixtures are within the recommended temperature range, slowly pour the lye solution into the oils. Use your stick blender, alternating short bursts with hand stirring. Continue until the batter reaches trace. Understanding Trace Light Trace •Thin batter •Similar to light cake batter •Leaves a faint trail on the surface This is usually the best time to add fragrance and color. Medium Trace •Similar to pudding •Leaves visible trails •Good for many swirl techniques Heavy Trace •Thick •Holds its shape •Needs to be poured quickly before hardening
Step 9
Cure Soap
Place the bars on a rack or shelf with good airflow. Allow them to cure for 4–6 weeks. During curing: •Water evaporates. •Bars become harder. •Lather improves. •Soap becomes longer lasting and milder. Don't rush this step—it makes a big difference in the quality of your finished soap.
Step 2
Measure Ingredients
Measure everything by weight, not by volume. Accurate measurements are one of the most important parts of successful soap making. You'll weigh: •Oils •Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) •Distilled Water
Step 6
Add Fragrance & Additives
Once you've reached light trace, add any desired additives. Popular options include: •Fragrance oils •Essential oils •Colorants •Honey •Colloidal oatmeal •Clays •Botanicals •Exfoliants Mix thoroughly but avoid over-blending.
Understanding Your Oils
Each oil contributes different qualities to your soap. Olive Oil - Gentle, conditioning, moisturizing Coconut Oil - Cleansing, bubbly lather, hardness Palm Oil or Lard - Hardness, longevity, stable bar Castor Oil - Stabilizes and boosts lather (typically around 5%) Shea Butter - Creamy, luxurious conditioning A balanced recipe combines oils to create a bar that is gentle, long-lasting, and produces a satisfying lather.
Step 3
Prepare the Oils
Melt any solid oils or butters first. Combine all oils according to your recipe. Allow them to cool to approximately 90–110°F.
Step 7
Pour Into Mold
Pour the soap batter into your mold. Tap the mold gently on the counter to release trapped air bubbles. Smooth the top if desired. Cover and allow the soap to rest for approximately 24 hours.
Common Beginner Mistakes
•Skipping the soap calculator •Measuring ingredients by volume instead of weight •Forgetting safety gear •Changing oils without recalculating the lye amount •Using aluminum equipment •Over-blending the batter •Unmolding too early •Using soap before it has fully cured
Step 4
Mix the Lye Solution
Always add lye to water—never water to lye. Slowly sprinkle the lye into the distilled water while stirring gently. The solution will become very hot and release fumes for a short time. Allow the lye solution to cool to approximately 90–110°F.
Step 8
Remove Mold & Cut
After about 24 hours: •Remove the soap from the mold. •Cut into bars if using a loaf mold. If the soap is still soft, allow it to sit another day before cutting.
Lye Safety
Reminder
If lye contacts your skin: •Rinse immediately with cool running water. If lye gets into your eyes: •Flush continuously with cool running water. •Seek emergency medical care immediately. Safety should always be your first priority.
