From Barn to Bee Yard: Preparing for Spring

As winter begins to loosen its grip, I’ve been spending time preparing for the busy months ahead. Yesterday’s sunshine was the perfect excuse to run the dogs, check on the bees, and reorganize the small barn to take inventory for the coming season. If you’d like a peek at those projects, I’ve shared a few updates on Facebook and Instagram.
This is a critical time for beekeepers, and a little diligence now makes all the difference later. A few important reminders:
Emergency Feed – This is the top priority. Check each hive to ensure they have adequate stores. Late-winter starvation is heartbreaking and preventable.
Spring Prep – Plan early mite treatments, finish rendering last season’s wax, and repair or repaint equipment before the rush begins.
Bottling & Labels – Take advantage of sales on honey bottles, and if you plan to sell, confirm your labels meet state requirements.
Colony Management – Decide how many colonies you’d like to maintain this year. Prepare extra equipment now or plan splits before swarm season. If you don’t want to increase, consider gifting a nuc to a friend or planning a brood break when conditions allow.
Ordering Bees – If you need bees, order from a reputable source soon (here's a link to purchase from me). Many suppliers sell out quickly.
New Beekeepers – Make sure your equipment is assembled and ready. Packages usually arrive in late April, while local nucs may take a bit longer depending on weather and inspections.
The heart of the season is just around the corner. It’s time to get ready — the bees certainly are.
Happy Keeping,
Deez L' Town Beez
